The Grey Willow Gift Tree

Like the Pussy Willow, the Grey willow will grow in most gardens and especially likes damp spots. You can prune it to your hearts content, which means it is ideal for smaller gardens and will re-grow each year.

Each gift tree comes in a little jute bag and you can add a personalised message. All our gift trees are grown to be the perfect size for best establishment and an ideal size for gifts. For most species this can range from 20-40cm above the root plug. If you would like to discuss specific sizes, please contact us.

Folklore of the Grey Willow Tree

Apart from practical uses of the grey willow tree for firewood and cricket bats, there is a strong history in Britain of people associating willow trees with mourning, probably because of the sad, drooping nature of weeping willow trees. In early Christian times, grey willow trees were known as a tree of celebration and girls would carry sprigs to prevent their hair being pulled by nasty boys. Quite how that worked is anybody's guess, but willow springs do make the best magic wands, so perhaps there was some witchcraft in there! Willow bark has also been used as pain relief for over 2000 years. The ancient recipe was: collect a little bit of bark from the tree in the spring time, being careful not to strip all the way round the willow tree, or you might kill the tree. Soak 3 teaspoons of the bark in cold water for 5 hours, then boil. Strain and drink a small glass each day. We at buy-trees-online have never tried this, so best to ask your doctor first!
