Holly Trees and Bushes

Nothing decorates the house at Christmas time quite like holly.

It can sometimes seem difficult to get holly berries, but this is because only the female holly tree produces berries and there is no way of knowing the gender of the holly plant on the nursery, so you are best to order several holly trees to ensure you get some holly berries. In fact, holly can make a great hedge which is hardier than many other species, so perhaps order 6 trees per metre of hedging and have your own supply for Christmas. The spikes on holly look beautiful in our homes, but actually they evolved to prevent mammals eating the berries so that they were reserved for birds, who could disperse the seed over vast distances. You will be in a race with the birds at Christmas time to harvest the holly berries, though it normally takes a couple of hard frosts to soften the berries up enough for the birds. When designing your garden, remember that holly is pretty slow-growing, perhaps only 20cm per year, so plan well ahead! Holly has played a significant part in British festivals for centuries - check the folklore tab for more info.

All our trees and shrubs are grown to be the perfect size for best establishment. For most species this can range from 20-60cm above the root plug. If you would like to discuss specific sizes, please contact us.

Holly Mythology

Whether as Jesus' crown or Thor's lightning, holly seems to have inspired most civilisations in which it grew. We like it best as Christmas decorations!
