Wych Elm Tree

Help restore our wonderful British Elms by planting a wych elm tree in your garden - the only native UK elm!

After the ravages of Dutch Elm Disease, we lost many of our beautiful Elms and there is now a country-wide conservation effort to restore elms across the country. If you are interested in taking part in a national experiment, then visit our friends at the Conservation Foundation . If you would like to do your part to restore Elms in Britain and get a tall and hardy tree, then a wych elm from buy-trees-online is a great option. Because it reproduces by seed, the wych elm has proven to be more resistant to Dutch Elm Disease than the English Elm, which despite the name is not native to the UK! A wych elm is relatively shade-tolerant, but much prefers not to be grown in very wet or dry spots, but can withstand air pollution and sea winds.

All our trees and shrubs are grown to be the perfect size for best establishment. For most species this can range from 20-60cm above the root plug. If you would like to discuss specific sizes, please contact us.

Mythology of the Wych Elm Tree

Ancient Britons associated he poor old wych elm tree with death and sadness, not only because branches can suddenly fall from old elm trees, but because the water-resistant quality of the elm wood made wych elm the preferred choice for coffin manufacture.

Wych elms were thought to house elves, which guarded the underworld and so the presence of wych elms indicated a passage to and from this world. This is probably why witches were known to avoid going anywhere near wych elm trees, but that is not why they are known as wych elms. The 'wych' refers to the Old English word for pliancy, or bendiness, which is a notable property of wych elm. The pliancy and water resistance of the wood made it perfect for boat building in later years. Wych elm was also used to make bows for Welsh archers and shinty sticks for Scottish clans - shinty is an ancient Scottish game a bit like hockey.
