Green Alder

Less well known than its alnus cousins the Common Alder and Grey Alder, the Green Alder shares many of the same properties and is also good for improving loose, infertile ground. The roots from alder trees 'fix' nitrogen from the air and convert it to a usable form, which makes the alnus viridis suitable for disused ground. The Green Alder is also known as crispa, meaning 'curly' referring to the Green Alder's leaves.

Green Alder can be used on similar sites to grey alder, such as loose slag heaps, but the green alder has some distinct differences to bear in mind. Green Alder trees often grow as a shrub with many stems growing from the ground and even when it does grow as a tree, green alder still quite small and rarely over 5m tall. A green alder can tolerate some shade, and will grow quickly and shade out slower growing conifers, so it is wise not to try and plant other trees under your green alder.

All our trees and shrubs are grown to be the perfect size for best establishment. For most species this can range from 20-60cm above the root plug. If you would like to discuss specific sizes, please contact us.

History of Green Alder

Though many people have blessed its presence, the Green Alder is not actually native to the UK and so we have not developed a folklore for it, unlike the Common Alder.
