Early Flowering Trees

Wild Cherry

The weather has been wonderful for gardeners in january and February - perfect both for getting a headstart with all the tidy-up and prep work after winter, and for really appreciating the wonderful range of early flowering plants which can easily get overlooked with all the focus on summer flowers. The early sun has brought many plants on more quickly than normal - last February we were trudging through the snow, this year sitting out  and enjoying blue skies and sunshine - enjoying record temperatures for winter. Many plants have been bursting into growth and flower, and I saw one of my favourite plants in beautiful early colour this week.

The wild cherry (Prunus Avium) is a native tree that has been widespread all over Europe since at least Roman times. It is a perfect hedgerow tree, with a mass of white flower colour usually in March and April. The flowers are similar to Japanese flowering cherries, but the habit of the tree is much less formal, making it feel like a very natural part of the landscape. It's a great choice where it has a little room to grow, and is a perfect addition for wildlife plantings.
