Mahonia

Related to berberis, the Mahonia plant is perfect for a beautiful, low-maintenance garden, especially on dry ground. Normally grown as a shrub upto 5m tall, Mahonia can also be grown as a loose hedge and can take moderate clipping. Apart from being very hardy and easy to keep, Mahonia is best known for its arrangement of colour: during the summer, Mahonia will display large, yellow flowers on a background of holly-like leaves. Come the autumn, Mahonia plants will grow blue berries so beloved by the birds before the Mahonia leaves turn shades of bronze and purple. Imagine having deep orange and purple holly-like leaves decorating your house at Christmas time for something just a little bit different. Or mix with holm oak and berberis for a range of leaves all resembling the holly. Mahonia deserves its popularity because it has the rare attributes of having beauty which moves and evolves with the seasons, but still being an incredibly easy plant to care for.

All our trees and shrubs are grown to be the perfect size for best establishment. For most species this can range from 20-60cm above the root plug. If you would like to discuss specific sizes, please contact us.

Mahonia has been used by Native Americans to treat a host of internal and external illnesses, but in Britain we have mainly used Mahonia for its berries, which make a rather tart jelly - use as a relish, or add lots and lots of sugar!
